Job description: St Edward's College in Malta is currently looking for a Head of Boarding to join its team on a part-time basis.
General concept of the role:
As a boarding school principal, you are responsible for ensuring the welfare, safety and discipline of the students staying at the boarding school. They play a crucial role in maintaining a positive and supportive living environment that is conducive to academic and personal development. Responsibilities
Student welfare:
- Monitor the general well-being of students in the boarding school
- Attend to students' emotional, physical and academic needs
- Provide support and guidance to students facing personal challenges.
Security and protection:
- Enforce and adhere to safety protocols within the boarding facility
- Conduct regular inspections to ensure a safe and clean living environment
- Respond promptly to emergencies and take appropriate action.
Supervision and discipline:
- Implement and enforce boarding rules and regulations
- Handle disciplinary issues promptly and fairly
- Promote a positive and respectful atmosphere among students.
Communication:
- Maintain open communication with students, staff and parents/guardians
- Keep the supervisor's logbook updated throughout his or her service
- Ensure proper handover to next manager
- Report incidents, concerns and notable developments to the appropriate authorities
- Attend regular meetings to address concerns and disseminate information.
Administrative tasks:
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, behavior, and incidents
- Collaborate with other staff to coordinate daily activities and routines
- Assist in the development and implementation of boarding policies.
Crisis intervention:
- Be prepared for crises and support students in need
- Collaborate with appropriate professionals (e.g. medical personnel) as necessary.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in education, youth work, social work or a related field is considered advantageous
- Previous knowledge of student support or dormitory areas is desirable
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to fairly enforce rules and maintain discipline
- Crisis management and conflict resolution skills
- Sensitivity to the different needs and backgrounds of students
- First aid and food handling certification (or willingness to do so).
Working conditions:
- Boarding school directors must work mornings, afternoons, nights, weekends and holidays
- The position may include on-call duties while on duty.
