Another One Bites the Dust: Transport Malta Faces Second Managerial Shake-up in a Month

Transport Malta Faces Second Managerial Shake-up in a Month

In a surprising turn of events, @TransportMalta is set to experience yet another shake-up in its managerial ranks, marking the second major change within a month. This time, the organization bids farewell to its Deputy CEO and Chief Operations Officer (COO), Kevin Farrugia, while welcoming Jeanette Axisa as she takes on a new role within the regulator.

Sources within the transport authority reveal that Farrugia, who has held the position since 2018, will soon depart to join the Foundation for Transport. As part of the reshuffling, Jeannette Axisa, the current Director-General of the foundation, will assume the role of Chief Officer at Transport Malta, effectively replacing Farrugia.

Interestingly, the departure of Farrugia will reportedly lead to the abolishment of the positions of Deputy CEO and COO at Transport Malta. This move is allegedly aimed at granting the newly appointed CEO, Jonathan Borg, full autonomy in running the authority “on his own terms.” However, insiders hint that Farrugia’s departure is just the tip of the iceberg, suggesting that more significant changes are on the horizon for Transport Malta in the weeks to come.

Throughout his tenure at Transport Malta, Farrugia has worked alongside two former CEOs and former Transport Minister Ian Borg, adding to the string of personalities he has encountered within the organization. This latest development comes hot on the heels of the previous CEO, Jeffrey Curmi, being swiftly replaced by Borg after less than a year on the job.

Speculation regarding this recent management shuffle had been circulating since last March, finally culminating in the Transport Ministry’s official announcement of the CEO change on April 29th.

In his new role at the Foundation for Transport, Farrugia is expected to tackle the challenging tasks of spearheading decarbonization efforts and facilitating the implementation of digital services within the transport industry. The foundation, jointly established by the Malta Chamber of SMEs, the Malta Employers’ Association, Malta Enterprise, MCAST, and Transport Malta, aims to assist industry players in embracing innovation and adopting eco-friendly technologies.

Prior to his time at Transport Malta, Farrugia briefly served as a finance director at Enemalta for a mere six months. His professional background also includes experience in the tourism and hospitality sectors, as indicated by his LinkedIn profile.

As Transport Malta continues to navigate these organizational upheavals, the industry remains on edge, eagerly anticipating further announcements and the potential impact on the authority’s operations and future direction.
